(BDYBIS) Canvas Bags

I saw a point of sale display sign that disturbed me today. No not that one for the latest Justin Beiber CD. No this one stated that I could “Save the Environment” wow I thought. Pretty big deal then, because the environment is everywhere even the skunty bits, you know the bits that make even Katie Price look clean. Beneath this bold claim I looked down to see what miracle product capable of saving humanity it was. It was a rather modest display of canvas shopping bags.

Now forgive me if I’m wrong canvas bags will not save the world. No matter how many anthemic songs Tim Minchin writes about them. Canvas bags barely fit any shopping inside because of the large seam needed to make them strong. The angle the shop was getting at here is if I buy one or more of the overpriced garish bags, I won’t have to use a plastic carrier bag ever again. Now this shop is in the middle of buttfuck nowhere. I have to drive 10 or so miles in my 1.2 litre diesel engined car to get there. I’d probably used more of my carbon footprint reading the fucking sign than I ever would save if I brought their entire stock of bags, but how did the bags get to the store. Magic low carbon Pixies?

The environment, the world in which we inhabit is fucked. We the human race ruined it for the rest of everyone. Like the one kid at the college party who can’t handle his booze and ends up taking a shit in the chocolate fountain. Ruined. We abused earth, making stuff, dumping stuff, breeding again and again, keeping too many cows. You name it we did it. But don’t worry canvas bags and Prius cars are here to save us.

The only reason Toyota make the Prius is to make money. Same reason Apple make Macs or Smith and Wesson make guns. There is a huge amount of coin to be gained by putting an environmental angle on to everything. Government subsidy and grants, really money for nothing. If there was no money to be made in saving the earth no-one would do it. Even the people who do the environmental studies are in it for the cash. For their paper to be printed to gain sponsorship from Toyota or some other corporate with a “green” angle. The Prius is a god awful car. Hybrid engined, more batteries around than a single woman with 50% off at “Good Vibrations” So the car is half and half, but all of the power comes from non-renewable sources. Coal burning power stations and oil.

So the Prius doesn’t fit the bill. The batteries in years to come will not break down (biohazard) and the manufacturing carbon footprint of the Prius is much higher than that or a normal car. So why do Toyota make it? It’s a market, they exploit it. Pure and simple.

It is too late for the earth. It is fucked. Life is short, recycle if you want to. Know however that there is money to be made. “Where there’s muck there’s brass” never been more true.

Please consider the environment before printing.
